Girls’ Basketball: No. 1 T.C. Williams 67, No. 4 Lee 55

(Look below the story for complete video highlights.)

It certainly wasn’t easy, but T.C. Williams put on a showcase in the fourth quarter of its game at fourth-ranked Lee Thursday night to illustrate just why it has firm hold on the area’s No. 1 ranking.

The Lancers held a double-digit the lead for most of the game on the strength of a high-powered offense that ran through senior forward J’Quita Babineaux, but the Titans and senior standout Teirra Ruffin-Pratt turned the tables in a hurry. T.C. Williams outscored Lee by 20 points in the fourth quarter en route to an impressive, 67-55 victory to keep its undefeated record in tact.

Lee, which was paced by Babineaux’s team-high 18 points and junior forward Kristine Mial’s 16, looked poised to pull of the upset when the fourth quarter began. But the Titans had other ideas.

T. C. Williams exploded in the final period, scoring 11 straight points. And with 6 minutes, 14 seconds remaining, Ruffin-Pratt scored four of her game-high 30 points on back-to-back baskets to give the Titans their first lead, 51-50.

“She is a great player,” T.C. Williams Coach Jim Lewis said. “I am not saying that because I am her coach. With passing, rebounding and blocked shots … she does everything well.”

The Lancers answered to regain a one-point lead, but moments later Babineaux was whistled for her fifth and final foul, and was forced the watch the game’s final 4 minutes, 21 seconds from the bench.

Without Babineaux to contend with inside, the Titans closed the game on a 16-3 run to hand Lee only its second loss of the season.  The Lancers’ first defeat came at the hands of these same Titans earlier this season by just five points.

“Lee played really well,” Lewis said. “They played with a lot of intensity and made some big shots.”

T. C. Williams senior guard Brittany Burts contributed 17 points in the Titan win, while freshman guard Sadie Barber and junior guard Khalia Boston each added six.

Boys’ Basketball: No. 1 T.C. Williams 67, No. 6 Annandale 59

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

**Thirteen Minutes of Game Highlights Below the Story, plus Post-Game Interviews with EJ and Travis**

It was a different Annandale team that took the floor Monday night at T.C. Williams. This was not the same one that lost at home to the Titans just three days after the New Year’s Eve celebration.

Sure, they wear the same jerseys numbers and look eerily similar to those 15 players. They even ran the same offense.

But these couldn’t be the same Atoms. Could they?

Sixth-ranked Annandale, which began the season just 3-6, had won six consecutive games since that Jan. 3 encounter with top-ranked T.C. Williams. The Atoms’ streak was snapped at the Garden on Monday, 67-59, but this rejuvenated team showed the poise of a true Patriot District contender.

“[We knew] they were going to come to play,” said Titans’ guard Ed Jenkins, who scored 12 points in the victory. “Every team comes to play T.C. Williams because everybody wants to beat us. It’s like a state game for everybody.

“So we just have to come out here and … take care of business and just do the small things: rebounding, talking on defense and just play ball.”

The Atoms trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but rallied to grab a 56-53 lead with 5 minutes, :37 seconds remaining in the game. Annandale outscored the T.C. Williams 25-9 over a nine-minute stretch that spanned from the end of the third period into the fourth.

Arkansas-transfer Jordan Anderson led the Annandale charge, scoring 10 of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter.

“That’s just how I play basketball,” Anderson said. “I came out ready to play.”

T.C. Williams, though, came roaring back and showed just why they are the two-time defending Patriot District champions. The Titans closed the game on a 14-3 run, with senior guard Travis Berry scoring his team’s final nine points en route to a game-high 19.

“I just felt I had to turn it up,” Berry said. “It was time to turn it up.”

T.C. Williams (14-2 overall, 9-0 Patriot District) has not lost to a district opponent in 37 games, dating back to a Feb. 17, 2005 loss to Lake Braddock.

For Annandale (10-7, 7-2), the defeat halts its winning streak, but not its confidence.

“I’d go back and play [T.C. Williams again],” Anderson said. “It’s just basketball. You win some, you lose some. It’s just a game. I’d go back and play them the same way that I did today. My team will come back and do the same thing.”

Boys’ Basketball: No. 1 T.C. Williams 63, Lake Braddock 47

By Jimmy Thomas
DigitalSports.com

Top-ranked T.C. Williams (10-2 overall, 6-0 Patriot District) defeated Lake Braddock (7-5, 1-4), 63-47, on Friday night, marking its ninth win in its last 10 games.

The lone blemish on that record came at the hands of perennial power Montrose Christian Academy this past weekend in a game that was decided in double overtime. Like the Montrose game where senior forward Anthony Winbush put in a team high 20, Winbush started Friday’s game at Lake Braddock on fire.

Winbush scored 10 of the Titans first 22 points to help give his team a seven point lead after one quarter.

“It was on point in the first quarter,” Winbush said when asked about his game. “Second through fourth quarter, it was just get my team involved, have a couple of rebounds, a couple assists and a couple steals.”

Winbush finished the game with 14 points, but the night belonged to senior guard Travis Berry. Berry hit four three-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points, while junior guard Edward Jenkins added 12.

“I just tried to come out here and give as much effort as I could to help my team get the victory,” Berry said. “For me to come here and do my part, it makes me feel like a winner because I helped my team.”

Despite T.C. Williams’ hot shooting the Bruins were only down 10 points at half time.

Lake Braddock junior guard Dominic Morra did his best to keep the Bruins in the game, combining acrobatic drives to the lane with three-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points. Junior forward Michael Landon, who was effective in the paint, and senior forward Haben Petros added 11 and nine points, respectively, for the Bruins.

Girls’ Basketball: T.C. Williams 69, Lee 64

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

**Check out the highlights at the bottom of the article**

In a game where the teams entered with a combined 17 wins to zero losses, two-time defending AAA Patriot District champions T.C. Williams outlasted Lee to pass its latest test relatively unscathed, 69-64.

“Teams are going to come at us because we’re on top right now,” junior Tierra Ruffin-Pratt said. “We beat Lee. We beat Edison. Edison is the state runner-up and we beat them. Lee comes in here – they hadn’t lost a game – and we beat them.

“That gets the momentum going our way so we just have to keep working hard and keep practicing hard.”

Ruffin-Pratt, who broke the school all-time scoring record in the second game of, this, her junior season, paced the Titans (8-0, 3-0) with a game-high 24 points.

“We knew it would be a big game – be a tough game – for the whole game,” she said. “We knew coming out and playing hard would keep us in the game, not giving up when they went on runs and keeping our heads when we went on runs.”

The Lancers (10-1, 2-1) made victory far from easy on TC Williams, holding a lead for several minutes in the first half and cutting the margin to two points with 1 minute, :01 second remaining. But Ruffin-Pratt, as if on cue, took over down the stretch, recording four points and a length-of-the-court assist to senior guard Brittany Burts in the final minute alone.

But Ruffin-Pratt wasn’t the only Titan who found rhythm when needed. With the Lancers focusing their defense on the standout junior late in the third, the T.C. Williams offense instead turned to junior Khalia Boston, who hit three three-pointers in less than a two-minute span over the third and fourth quarters to finish with 13 points.

“KB is a shooter,” Ruffin-Pratt said. “Knowing that she is on the court, you can pass her the ball and she can knock down a three. She hasn’t been shooting the ball that much this season, but when it comes time to shoot she is able to knock it down.”

In addition to the heroics of the Titan juniors, a potential Lee comeback was stymied by foul trouble. Senior guard Kashei Hopkins (eight points) and junior forward Kristine Mial, both starters, were sidelined for nearly eight minutes when each picked up their fourth foul midway through the third quarter.

“I thought it was unfair that they didn’t let us play that much,” Mial said, “But we really can’t blame it on the [referees].”

There were a total of 47 fouls called in the game.

Mial scored nine of her team-high 18 points within 90 seconds of returning to game late in the fourth.

“I was really anxious and I saw our team had come down while I was on the bench,” she said. “I really wanted to get back in the game.”

Mial fouled out less than two minutes after her fourth-quarter scoring spree.

Of note for the Lancers, senior J’Quita Babineaux added 14 points while junior Priscilla Moseh scored 13 in the loss.

The Patriot District rivals will meet again at 7:45 p.m. on January 31 at Lee.
