Boys’ Playoff Basketball: Northern Region Semifinals

** Look below the story to re-live both games with highlights on two separate video players. Complete, post-game footage will be posted in the early afternoon.

When Langley senior Ryan Davenport went up for a rebound with just over a minute left in its Northern Region semifinal against Madison and not only scored on the putback but also drew the foul, Saxons’ Coach Travis Hess had seen enough. Hess tilted his head back, threw open his arms and let out a blood-curdling scream that was a result of sheer exuberance.

Davenport’s bucket, and subsequent successful free throw, put No. 5 Langley ahead by nine points with 1 minute, 9 seconds remaining to secure what proved a 46-38 Saxon victory. It marks the first time in Langley’s 43-year history that its boys’ basketball team will make an appearance in the Virginia AAA state tournament.

But first Langley must square off with top-ranked T.C. Williams, which likewise earned a state tournament berth with its 50-37 victory over Lake Braddock in the second half of the semifinal double-header. The two teams will meet at 9 p.m. Saturday at George Mason University’s Patriot Center to decide the Northern Region championship.

“It’s really, really exciting,” Hess said of advancing to Saturday’s title game. “It’s a special feeling. The fact that we get to play in the regional championship tomorrow, and if it is T.C. Williams I don’t know how many people are going to give us a whole lot of chance … but anything can happen in one night and we’ll see.”

Said Titan senior guard Travis Berry: “It’s a big step and a big accomplishment to make it to states, but we want to show that we’re the No. 1 team and to do that we have to keep progressing. We know [Langley] is a pretty good team, too, if they made it this far, but I don’t think any team in this region can stick with us. If they’re going to try to run with us they’re going to be in trouble.”

Both Madison and Lake Braddock tried to slow their opponents in the semifinals, but the tactic proved unsuccessful on both accounts. The Warhawks were able to limit the Saxons’ offense in the first half — holding their opponent to just 16 first-half points — but Langley went on a 16-2 run to start the third period to turn what had been a five-point deficit into an 11-point lead.

Madison scored the first basket of the third quarter but did not score again until just 1:48 remained in the period when junior Gavin Hilburn hit a three-pointer to halt Langley’s run.

“The last two games we played we were 4-for-9 in both games from three’s, and that’s how we play,” Warhawks’ Coach Chris Kuhblank said. “Tonight I think our stats had us 2-for-14 from three’s, and that’s not how we play. We scored the first two, I think, in the third quarter and we felt we could go ahead and beat them. But then we stopped doing what we do. Now we still played good [defense] — our defensive goal was 45 and what did they get? Forty-six? … We played defense the way we wanted to, but we didn’t manage the game on offense the way we wanted to in the second half. That’s what lost it.”

Langley, meanwhile, was led offensively by senior Ahmed Malik (11 points) and junior Thomas Kody (10) during that pivotal third-quarter stretch, and also got three big blocks by junior Derek Baker that led to fast-break opportunities.

“The big difference was the first half was their pace,” Hess said. “They wanted to be deliberate and wanted it to be slow. The second half we came out and ran our pace, up-and-down the floor. We got some easy baskets, stopped settling for jump shots like we did in the first half, got out to a little bit of a lead and then were able to protect it.”

The Bruins used their now infamous stall tactic early in its game against the Titans — drawing back-and-forth chants of “Shoot the ball!” and “Hold that ball!” from the two student cheering sections — but a quick spurt by T.C. Williams at the end of the second quarter turned a four-point Titan advantage into a 20-11 lead at the break.

“We wanted to keep it within striking distance,” Lake Braddock Coach Brian Metress said. “I thought the key point of the game was with about three minutes to go in the second quarter we kind of pulled the trigger on two deep three’s that really weren’t part of what we were trying to do. And we missed them both and they came roaring down and made a couple of easy buckets … and that’s my fault.

“We should have been a little bit better there but we weren’t. But a lot of credit goes to them. They’re very, very active.”

T.C. Williams was led by junior guard Edward Jenkins, who scored a game-high 18 points, but its three other scorers also reached double-figures as well. Senior forward Anthony Winbush scored 11 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, while Berry and senior center Joshua Jordan added 10 points a piece.

Junior guard Dominic Morra paced Lake Braddock with 16.

“We wanted to see what was the plan,” T.C. Williams Coach Ivan Thomas said. “We knew if we were up they couldn’t continue to [stall], so we got up. But then the guys, some of them called the half-court traps that we had. I just said, ‘Okay, run it.’ I was content with 12-6 to be honest. I wasn’t’ going to let them tire us out. But we ran a couple of half-court traps and we got some steals out of it, and so it helped.”

It’s that same kind of defensive pressure that Thomas said he hopes will lead the Titans to victory in Saturday’s regional finale against the Saxons.

“Langley, I think they’re a tough team,” Thomas said. “We’ve never faced them before. But I think they run extremely good offensive sets. I’m hoping that our pressure will do the same thing to them. I don’t think they’ve seen the type of pressure that we’re capable of putting on them.”

Girls’ and Boys’ Playoff Basketball: Patriot District Championships

By Mike Austin
DigitalSports.com

Girls’ Championship Game
No. 1 T.C. Williams 51, No. 9 West Springfield 42

In a night that featured great energy by both teams, it was the steady offense of top-ranked T.C. Williams that prevailed as the Titans claimed their third consecutive Patriot District title and extending their unbeaten streak to 22 games.

West Springfield played well in the first half, exhibiting excellent patience and ball movement, but the Spartans’ jump shots caught iron and refused to fall. And in the second quarter, T.C. Williams tightened its defense, holding the Spartans to only four points.

The Titans, on the other hand, were a model of offensive consistency. Led by standout junior guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, T.C. Williams scored 13 points in the first quarter and 12 in the second. Ruffin-Pratt, named the tournament MVP, finished with a game-high 22 points.

The second half opened with a furious onslaught by West Springfield, which seemed renewed after the half-time break. The Spartans were led by senior swingman Lauren Massie, who scored a team-high 13 points.

And while West Springfield refused to fold — the Spartans closed within 45-41 with just over 3 minutes to play on a three-pointer by junior guard Pui Sham — T.C. Williams also failed to break. The Titans played tenacious defense of the final three minutes, limiting West Springfield to just one point.

And when the final buzzer finally sounded, it was the 22-0 Titans who celebrated not only their district championship but also a perfect season.

No. 1 T.C. Williams         13  12  13  13 — 51
No. 9 West Springfield  10    4  13  15 — 42

All-Tournament Team

Boys’ Championship Game
No. 1 T.C. Williams 81, West Potomac 47

T.C. Williams’ top-ranked boys’ team kept the Titans’ dominance intact in the second half of Saturday’s Patriot District championship double-header at Lake Braddock, smothering West Potomac, 81-47, to win its third straight district title.

With the win, the Titans improve to 51-0 in Patriot District play over the past three seasons.

Strong guard play by West Potomac senior Craig Gaylord, combined with the inside presence of senior big man Jimmy Bennett, put the Wolverines ahead in the game’s opening minutes. After trading baskets early, Gaylord sank a three pointer while Bennett recorded a pair of layups to give the Wolverines a 9-7 lead after three minutes of play. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, that was their last lead of the game.

Less than a minute later, the Titans knotted the score at 9 and began to exert control. T.C. Williams was led by senior guard Travis Berry, who scored seven points in the opening quarter and junior guard Gavin Peterson, who added five.

The second quarter continued the fast pace of play, with good ball handling by the guards and strong inside play by the big men for both teams. T.C. Williams senior center Joshua Jordan became more involved with the offense, scoring twice in the period while continuing to provide a strong defensive presence inside. Such balanced scoring from the Titans led to 15 second-quarter points and a more comfortable, 10-point lead at half time.

The start of the second half saw an offensive explosion by the Titans. T.C. Williams, benefiting from several steals, scored 20 in the period, led by senior center Anthony Winbush. Winbush scored 10 points in the frame, while junior guard Edward Jenkins contributed eight. West Potomac, meanwhile, struggled to put the ball in the basket. Senior guard Robert Byrd and Gaylord combined for seven of the Wolverines’ nine third-quarter points.

The fourth quarter proved more of the same, as the Titans extended their lead and, ultimately, claimed their third consecutive Patriot District title.

No. 1 T.C. Williams   18  15  20  28 — 81
West Potomac        13  10   9   15 — 47

Girls’ Playoff Basketball: Patriot District Semifinals

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Check below the stories for video highlights of both games. Check back Friday evening for dozens of new highlights as well.

Game 1
T.C. Williams 61, Annandale 46

T.C. Williams Coach
Jim Lewis, after his team advanced to the Patriot District
championship game with a 61-46 win over Annandale on Thursday, was succinct in explaining his team’s continued dominance.

When you have a great player it opens up the game for everyone,” said Lewis, whose team stands undefeated at 21-0 on this season. “And this kid is special.”

The kid Lewis reference was, of course, Titan junior standout Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, who poured in 25 points to help her team remain perfect.

“We are happy to be in the championship game,” Lewis added. “I expect my team to come out and complete hard — like champions — tomorrow.”

Senior guard Brittany Burts, one of eight Titans who scored, added 16 points.

Annandale senior Jenna McRae led the Atoms with team-high 17 points, and junior guard Alexis Williams added 10.

After a 10-13 season a year ago, Annandale Coach Cleveland Williamson has his team moving in the right direction. The Atoms, with only one senior on their roster, finished 13-10 this season and have earned a berth in next week’s Northern Regional tournament.

T.C. Williams, meanwhile, is scheduled to play West Springfield at 7 p.m. Friday at Lake Braddock in the district championship game.

No.1 T.C. Williams  16  10 16  19 — 61
Annandale            11    5  11  19 — 46

T.C. Williams — Barber 1 0-0 2; Ruffin-Pratt 11 3-5 25; Boston 4 0-0 8; Fikes 1 2-2 4; Huggins 0 2-2 2; Burts 8 0-2 16; James 1 0-0 2; Horton 1 0-2 2; Norman 2 0-0 2; Team Totals: 27 7-14 61. Annandale — McRae 7 3-3 17; Clarke 2 3-4 8; Williams 4 0-0 10; Burns 2 0-0 4; Vente 1 0-0 2; Hughes 2 0-0 5; Team Totals: 14 6-7 46.  Three-pointers — Annandale 4 (Williams 2, Hughes, Clarke).

Game 2
West Springfield 65, Lee 60 (OT)

West Springfield Coach Bill Gibson, in his 23rd season at the helm, has led his teams to 11 district titles, five regional crowns and two state championships. It is safe to say Gibson knows what it is like to be the hunted. But in Thursday night’s second Patriot District tournament semifinal, the Lady Spartans were the hunters — and they got their prey.

West Springfield upset No. 3 Lee, 65-60, in overtime to earn a spot in Friday’s finale against No. 1 T.C. Williams.

With :06.4 seconds remaining in regulation, senior guard Kashei Hopkins (nine points) hit two clutch free throws to give the Lancers a 52-51 lead that completed their comeback. Lee had been down by seven just moments before.

But as Spartans’ junior guard Christen Gibson brought the ball up court prepared to take the final shot of the game, she was fouled on a steal attempt and was sent to the foul line. Gibson hit one-of-two attempts to send the game into overtime tied at 52.

Spartans’ junior wing Pui Sham (18 points) started the extra period by hitting one of her four three-pointers, and West Springfield went a perfect 8-for-8 from the line down the stretch to seal the victory. Junior Sam Landers scored 15 points for the Spartans, while senior Lauren Massie added 13.

“We feel like we are on cloud nine,” Massie said. “It’s a great feeling. We came ready to play. We knew we could beat them from the beginning, and we finally executed.”

Lee was led by senior forwards Kristine Mial and Jay Babineaux, who scored 19 and 12 points, respectively.

West Springfield           13  12  16  11 13 — 65
No. 3 Robert E. Lee

Lee — Hopkins 2 5-7 9; Williams 2 0-1 4; Babineaux 5 2-4 12; Pr. Moseh 3 5-5 12; Gropp 1 0-0 2; Bayoumi 1 0-0 2; Mial 8 3-3 19; Team Totals: 22 15-20 60. Boys’ Playoff Basketball: Patriot District Semifinals

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

**Re-live the entire game in 6 min., 24 sec with the video player below. Interviews added.**

No. 1 T.C. Williams 26, Lake Braddock 20

Dating back to a 2005 District Championship loss to Lake Braddock, top-ranked T.C. Williams entered its Patriot District semifinal against the Bruins with 49 consecutive wins in district play. But the fan response to the game was more entertaining than the action itself.

Lake Braddock employed its infamous stall technique from beginning-to-end Wednesday, but it was the Titans who would left the Bruins’ gym victorious — at a diminutive count of 26-20.

“I know [Coach Brian] Metress and I knew it was coming,” T.C. Williams Coach Ivan Thomas said. “He wants to win. I have respect for him. He thinks of creative ways to help his team to get the most out of them. He doesn’t care. He’ll make it 6-2. He wants to win.

“We had to be mentally ready and my guys were.”

The games’ first shot attempt did not come until 1 minute, 53 seconds of play had passed. And Titan junior Gavin Peterson did not hit the games’ first field goal until the 3:17 mark of the first quarter. Lake Braddock’s only field goal of the opening period came at the buzzer, courtesy of senior Ian Asinugo (game-high 10 points, half of the team total).

T.C. Williams senior Ed Jenkins finished tied for the team-high with six points.

“We already knew they were going to hold the ball for the whole game, that’s the style they play,” Jenkins said. “We were ready for it.”

The entire contest lasted just 1 hour, 16 minutes — and that includes the 10-minute, half time break. Neither team scored more than nine points in any single quarter. There was even a stretch of nearly three minutes in the fourth that senior Haben Petros held with the ball without dribbling.

“You all need a shot clock in high school basketball,” said Thomas, in his third season at T.C. Williams. “All jokes aside, you guys are here and the press covers these games to see these guys get to the next level. If that’s how they play at the next level, why not prepare them for it?”

The Titans, having won their 50th consecutive district game counting the postseason, look to earn their third consecutive Patriot District championship on Friday against West Potomac. Lake Braddock will face the winner of the Concorde District tournament in the first round of the Northern Region tournament next week.

“We have beaten the front-runner in the Concorde District,” said junior Dominic Morra, one of three Bruins to make the box score. “And we have scrimmaged Chantilly, the second one. I feel confident going [against] the Concorde District. I’m looking forward to that game.

“The road doesn’t mean anything to us.”

Morra finished with four points, third best on the Bruins’ team.

          Lake Braddock    7  7  7  5 — 20
No. 1  T.C. Williams       3  5  9  3 — 26

Lake Braddock — Asinugo 4 2-3 10; McLucas 1 4-4 6; Morra 1 1-3 4. Team totals: 6 7-10 20. T.C. Williams — Jenkins 3 0-1 6; Winbush 2 2-3 6; Berry 1 2-2 5; Jordan 1 1-2 3; Peterson 1 1-2 3; Copeland 1 0-0 2; Yates 0 1-2 1. Team totals: 9 7-12 26.  Three-pointers — Lake Braddock 1 (Morra); T.C. Boys’ Playoff Basketball: Lake Braddock 56, Lee 54

By Angela Watts
Senior Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for dozens of video highlights from Tuesday night’s first-round, Patriot District tournament game.)

After a 56-54 victory over fifth-seeded Lee, Lake Braddock junior guard Dominic Morra stood outside the Bruins’ locker room Tuesday night and tried to hide his smile. It wasn’t that he was anything short of thrilled — and, admittedly, relieved — that fourth-seeded Lake Braddock had escaped the first round of the Patriot District tournament.

It was that a post-game, celebratory cupcake had turned his teeth bright blue.

“I’m just happy to get out of here with the win,” he said, laughing with a hand over his mouth.

But, the truth was, he was largely responsible for it.

Morra scored a game-high 17 points in the victory, 10 of which came on critical, fourth-quarter free throws.

“They double-teamed Dominic the whole game and he made ’em pay,” Bruins’ Coach Brian Metress said. “He went right down the gut every
time and either dished to a guy for a layup or he went to the line.

“With about two minutes and 28 seconds to go on the clock I turned to
our guys and said, ‘There’s going to be about 15 more possessions.’ And we wanted to keep the ball in his hands the rest of the game.”

To do that, the responsibility of inbounding the ball against Lee’s full-court pressure defense fell on the shoulders of 5-feet, 4-inch sophomore guard Patch McLucas. Each time he succeeded in getting the ball into Morra’s hands, and in an effort to extend the game Lee was forced to foul him immediately.

And while Morra certainly wasn’t perfect from the stripe — he made only 13 of 22 attempts on the night — he did connect on 10 foul shots over the game’s final two minutes. This included hitting five-of-six critical free throws over a span of just 11.2 seconds to extend what had been a 51-49 lead with less than a minute to play to a 56-49 margin with :11.2 remaining.

Still, Lee, which was driven throughout the game by the aggressive play of sophomore Walter Griffin (14 points) and seniors Tad Dickman (13) and Vonelle Cherry (12), was not finished.

The Lancers drove down the court and saw Dickman nail a three-pointer from the top of the key with :05.3 to go. Lee got the ball back and Dickman heaved up another three-pointer, but this time he was fouled on the attempt and awarded three foul shots with :03.0 to play.

He hit the first two, and then intentionally missed the third. Executing the play to perfection, Dickman rebounded his own missed shot, and was fouled again on the putback attempt, sending him to the line down just two points with 1.7 showing on the clock.

This time, though, Dickman missed his first free throw, and failed on a second intentional miss when he committed a lane violation, sealing the victory for the host Bruins.

The reward for winning, though, is a second-round date with top-seeded and top-ranked T.C. Williams at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Braddock, the host site for the remainder of the Patriot District tournament.

“I told our guys that we haven’t done anything yet to shock the region,” Metress said. “And if we beat them, we’ll shock the region that’s for sure. And we plan on beating them.

“I mean, I think they’re keeping score, and the game’s tomorrow at 6. And we’re coming to play. We want to be in the most competitive environment we can be in, and they’re going to bring it. And so are we.”

The second game of Wednesday night’s semifinal double-header will feature second-seed Annandale
against sixth-seeded West Potomac, which upset third-seeded Hayfield on
Tuesday. All four semifinal participants have already earned automatic berths into the upcoming Northern Region tournament.
