Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball: No. 8 Titans Sweep Hayfield

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links above to access a full photo gallery and dozens of video highlights from Friday’s doubleheader.

It isn’t often that the T.C. Williams boys’ basketball team, the reigning Virginia AAA state champion, takes a backseat to anyone.

But Friday night at The Garden, even the extension of the No. 8 Titans’ 67-game win streak against Patriot District opponents with a 61-55 victory over Hayfield wasn’t enough to earn top billing.

This night, instead, belonged to fellow senior Tierra Ruffin-Pratt.

Ruffin-Pratt got Senior Night rolling with a 40-point performance against the Hawks in the first game of the doubleheader. And she made look downright easy, racking up countless steals, rebounds and assists in addition to her gaudy point total.

The North Carolina-bound guard, who led the No. 8 Titans to a big, 86-49 victory, was then surprised during half time of the boys’ game when it was revealed that her No. 4 jersey would be permanently retired.

Ruffin-Pratt, who has totaled more than 2,000 points in her high school career, is the first girls’ basketball player at T.C. Williams to earn such distinction.

“She’s all-world,” Titan boys’ Coach Julian King said. “First-class talent; first-class person.

“I mean, for somebody to be able to go out every night and have the stats that she has and still play unselfish basketball is truly amazing.”

Girls’ Coach Cavanaugh Hagen, whose team improved to 18-4 overall and 14-0 in the Patriot District, said she considers all too often that Ruffin-Pratt might be the best player she’ll ever coach.

“I think about it all the time,” she said, tearing up. “But I’m enjoying every moment of it. She is every coach’s dream. She’s the heart-and-soul of this program. She’s the face of T.C. and what we aspire the kids to become. She has an amazing talent and she’s such a great leader, too.

“It’s just an honor to coach her.”

Ruffin-Pratt was one of 10 senior basketball players honored in pre-game festivities Friday night along with teammates Khalia Boston, Da’Yana Campbell, Monica Fikes, Danielle Thorne and Chanel Yancey and boys’ players Dominique Copeland, E.J. Jenkins, Gavin Peterson and Marcus Via.

All have left their own mark on the Titans program — but the boys, too, have left a legacy.

With the victory over Hayfield on Friday, T.C. Williams has not lost to a Patriot District opponent since 2005.

“It means a lot, because it means we’ve been working hard … forever,” said Jenkins, who led T.C. Williams with a game-high 16 points. “It’s a dynasty.

“I’ve been here for four years and we haven’t lost a district game, as you know. It means a lot to us and all four seniors that have played varsity basketball since we were freshmen.”

Hayfield (17-5, 11-3) threatened to end the streak, rallying from a 46-36 deficit with 1 minute, 16 seconds left in the third quarter to knot the score at 46 on a Brandon Winbush (12 points) breakaway layup with 7:12 to play.

But the Titans, as they have all season when pushed, responded with harassing defensive pressure and timely shooting. T.C. Williams (20-2, 14-0) pushed its lead back to 54-50 with 1:14 to play on a bank shot by junior forward Billy Rowland and never looked back.

“I’m very proud of the win streak, but let me say that th win streak is definitely not on our minds,” King said. “We try to win every game. Even if we were playing the Washington Wizards tonight we want to win every game and we expect to win. The streak is just icing on the cake.”

Both Titan teams enter the start of the Patriot District tournament on Tuesday as the respective No. 1 seeds.

“I tell the girls all the time that to be able to wear T.C. Williams on their chests and over their hearts is something they have to cherish,” Hagen said. “And even though this is the end of the regular-season, we have a lot more ahead of us in the post-season. One game at a time is what I try to focus on. There are very talented teams in our district so we have to come ready to play on Tuesday.

“But for us and what we know we want to do … there are great things to come.”

And much more work, King said, to be done.

“We’ve got to continue to come to practice, every day, with a blue-collar work eithic,” he said. “If they just come to work every day with their hard hats on, and stay together as a team, it’ll all take care of itself.”
